Club discussion / Membership Renewal 2018
« on: January 22, 2018, 07:13:33 PM »
For those that haven't already done so, memberships are now due for renewal.

Membership renewal is now done through the British Cycling website at the following address:

https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/club/profile/2606/manchester-wheelers-club

Prices remain the same as last year:

Senior: £20
Junior: £10
Family: £30 (min. 1 adult, 1 child; max 2 adults, children from one family unlimited)

When renewing please do also review the volunteer section and tick which club activities you can help with this year. We struggle with volunteers for all events and activities. If the work to run events, club rides and activities was shared between ALL members, it would make for a more active and vibrant club.

Those of you wishing to start the new year with spangly new club kit can do so via Pente at the usual link http://www.pente14.com/shop/19-manchester-wheelers and those nice chaps over at Cycle Space in Disley even have some samples on display at the shop for you to try before you buy, so go pay them a visit!

Thanks and see you all in 2018!

Club events & results / Club Hill Climb Championships 2017
« on: July 19, 2017, 09:53:45 PM »
Right, events for this years Club Hill Climb Championship have been chosen. They are....

Tues 1st Aug - Long Hill (Buxton CC) - 7pm
Wed 9th Aug - Pyms Chair (Macc Whlrs) - 7pm
Sat 9th Sep - Brickworks (Man Whlrs) - 11am (HQ Pott Shrigley Village Hall)

All events are ‘club’ level events, which means you don’t need to enter in advance. Just turn up on the day and pay your entry fee of £3/ 4 usually. The events themselves are open to anyone, but to be eligible for the championship you must be a first claim Manchester Wheelers member. The winners of the series are the man/lady with the fastest accumulated time over all 3 events. Most importantly trophies are up for grabs, which will be awarded at the annual dinner.

For the Brickworks, we have Pott Shrigley Village Hall again as HQ (on the junction of Shrigley Rd and Bakestonedale Rd) and as an added bonus, the fastest rider on the day walks away with the legendary Brickies trophy, plucked from the heap by Hollys own hand! If anybody is available to help out for that one please let Holly or myself know.

See you there!

Club discussion / Rider of the Month
« on: May 07, 2017, 08:42:08 PM »
Here are the previous Rider of the Month winners since May 2015. Just copying them over from the old forum for the sake of posterirty....

May 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the Month for May goes to newly crowned National Masters Road Race Champion and stripey jumper collector, Ruth Taylor.

Congrats Ruth!

Any nominations for Rider of the Month for June, please send me a PM. Ta!

June 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month this month goes to Scott Burns.

Not content with simply defending his Pursuit title at the Masters National Track Champs and bagging silver medals in both the Kilo and points race, Scott also set a new club 10 mile record of 18:43 on the Hull course (V718), edging out the previous record of 18:47 set by Si Bridge!

Just to put things in context that is 32mph average speed! The current competition record held by Alex Dowsett is 17:20, and Wiggins' recent attempt at the record resulted in a 17:58, (also on the V718 course incidentally).

Absolutely phenomenal work Scott!

July 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for July, without question, goes to Kiera Byland who managed to scoop not one, not two, but THREE gold medals at the special olympics held in Los Angeles!!!!!!!

Kiera took the wins in the women's 15km road race, the women's 10km road race and the women's 10km TT!

Amazing work Kiera!

August 2015 - Rider of the Month

Augusts rider of the month goes to Lukas Hodgson. Lukas notched up the overall victories in both the club Scratch champs AND the club Hill Climb champs... not to mention being fastest wheeler in all 3 hill climbs! And all on fixed gear too!

As if that wasn't enough he also romped home with the Briargrove Road sausage roll challenge, taking home the magnificent prize of 50 odd sossy rolls!!! What an absolute specimen!

September 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for September goes to Kristian Spreckley for being a little bit of a cyclocross demon and consistently smashing it up in the NWCCA races this season. Never outside of the top 5 in the Vets category so far!

Well done Kristian!

UPDATE: Just to add Kristian picked up his first win this saturday at the Port Sunlight Wheelers event. Nice work!!

October 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for October goes to Andy Turner who picked up a nice little medal haul at the recent LVRC National Track Championships in Newport. A bronze medal in the individual pursuit and silver in the 750m time trial! Well done Andy. Gold next time though please!

December 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for December is unquestionably Scott Burns. It's not every day a member of the club attempts a world record, let alone The Hour. But Scott did it twice within a week!

Unfortunately he missed out on the masters (30-34) record of 47.76km set by the american Curtis Gunn, by a mere 159 metres. That's just over half a lap of the track! But the shear determination and refusal to give up was amazing. A second attempt was somehow miraculously arranged the following weekend, thanks largely to the Wheelers track crew giving up their session to make it happen. But the previous weeks effort was clearly still in the legs and it wasn't to be.

Scotts acheivement of 47.60km (29+ mph) is an astounding feat that is going to stand as a club record for a very long time to come. And it definitely gave the rest of us a bit of excitement over the christmas period. Thanks Scott!

Anyway, there's always the 35-39 record....

Club discussion / John Woodburn RIP
« on: April 16, 2017, 11:28:36 AM »
Life member and legend John Woodburn has sadly passed away.

A 25 mile, BBAR, 12 hour and 24 hour champion as well as holder of various point to point records, most famously, Lands End to John O Groats. John became the first rider to double up the 24 hour and 12 hour national championship victories in 1981 and his distance of 488.43 miles for the 24 still stands as a club record.

The thoughts of all connected to the club are with John's family at this time.

RIP John
