Everything else / Free Strength & Conditioning
« on: September 17, 2018, 12:19:52 PM »
Hi All

Received this message from member Alan Bisseker, who's offering some free strength and condition sessions for club members. Alan was also part of the original team that set up our Manchester Wheelers Aces juniors section.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wanted to get back in touch regarding running some free strength & conditioning (‘S&C’) sessions for the Wheelers, with a view to providing ongoing and free advice regarding strength training for cycling to all members.
Regarding my credentials, I am a UK Strength & Conditioning Association Member with nearly 10 years experience in S&C (predominantly endurance sports), having worked with some of the best coaches in Europe.  I am also a Level 2 Road & Time Trial and Track Cycling Coach.
As a qualified strength coach and at the tender age of 33, I established my strength coaching business - imaginatively named STRONG (https://www.strongfitnessproject.com/) and focussing on sports performance.  Currently based out of RX Gym in West Didsbury.
Cycling is a passion of mine and to be honest I just love the science behind creating better, stronger athletes & riders.
Anyway, to cut to the chase:
I would like to offer all Wheelers members a FREE Trial session with me at RX Gym, The Boulevard, West Didsbury
The sessions can be run on a 1:1 basis or in pairs
The sessions will be 1 hour long and will:
Assess weaknesses in force development and mobility that are prevalent amongst riders
Be discipline specific
Introduce riders to the concept of incorporating strength training within their year round training plan (i.e. what to focus on and when)
Include a warm up and example session for the riders to take away.
If some of the above trials progress into paid plans / coaching, great.  If not, then at least the members will understand a lot more about strength training for cycling (and be much better riders for it).
I have also attached a few notes on the importance of strength training.
If possible, would you mind posting the above on your forum / circulating amongst members?
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all.
Kind Regards
Alan
Dear Manchester Wheelers,
My name is Dr Alister McCormick. I am a researcher at Plymouth Marjon University, originally from the Peak District (Chapel-en-le-Frith). I am contacting you about a piece of research that we are conducting into the mental aspects of road cycling, triathlon, and running.
We intend to use the findings to benefit road cyclists, such as members of Manchester Wheelers. The main aim of our research is to help people to find and use guidance on mental aspects of training (e.g., setting goals, getting motivated), preparing (e.g., getting "in the zone", dealing with nerves), and performing in events (e.g., pushing through exertion and pain, coping with problems), so that they perform better and have a more satisfying experience.
To help with the research, we are looking for people (age 18 and older) who participate either competitively or non-competitively in road cycling events (time trials, road races, or sportives), triathlons, or running events (5km and further, e.g., Parkruns, 10km runs, half-marathons) to complete a one-off, short survey.
If you could share this email with members of Manchester Wheelers (and other relevant contacts that you have), then it would be much appreciated. Help from road cyclists, triathletes, and runners is very important for the research, and will be used to help people to find and use guidance on mental parts of training, preparing, and performing.
I would be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. Thank you for your time.
To complete the survey, please click on FILL OUT FORM at the bottom of this email. Alternatively, the URL is:
Best wishes,
Alister
Dear all,
The Hill Climb season is fast approaching and it’s time for the anti-gravity experts to start sending in those entries.
The East Lancs RC / Rochdale CTC promote two events in September to give everyone a flying start to the Hill climb season, which are;
The East Lancs RC Two Stage Hill Climb on Sunday 10th September; and
The Beard Cup on behalf of Manchester & District CTC on Sunday 17th September.
The East Lancs Hill Climb is being organised by Andy Regan and held on Sunday 10th September, under the jurisdiction of the CTT rules and regulations, so complete the CTT entry form and send in to Andy asap.  This event has been gathering momentum every year so give it a go this year, up Huddersfield Road in the morning and up Buckstones Road in the afternoon.
The Beard Cup Hill Climb is being organised by myself on behalf of Manchester & District CTC.  The Event is publicised on the Cycling UK (CTC) Calendar and it is being held on Sunday 17th September, which is one week after the East Lancs RC 2-Stage Hill Climb on the 10th September, so brownie points are on offer for those who enter both hill climbs ?
The link to the Cycling UK web site is included here:  http://www.cyclinguk.org/event/beard-cup-hill-climb-17
The course to be used is the same as last year up out of Diggle
The HQ is the Woolyknit café in Diggle as it was last year, and I’m grateful for their support again.
The entry fee remains an inflation busting £2, which is extremely good value for the pain the competitors will go through !!!!
Please find attached the Entry Form and Parental Consent Form for the Event.
Please note all entrants under 18 must have the form countersigned by a parent or guardian.
In order to qualify for any form of Prize or Trophy you must have sent your entry form to me complete with your entry fee by the closing date of Tuesday 5th September 2017
PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS EMAIL TO MEMBERS, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES WHO MAY NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE DISTRIBUTION ABOVE.
I look forward to receiving your entries again over the next few weeks.
Cheers
Dave
Hi,
We are working with British Cycling and HSBC UK to produce a virtual reality video that will be available to participants throughout various cycling events this summer.
We are filming the content on Wednesday 17th May at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester and we are looking to source around 10 cyclists as extras to be involved in the video.
The volunteers will have the opportunity to meet and cycle with some of the Great Britain Cycling Team. We are hoping to have Jason and Laura Kenny, Chris Hoy and Joanna Rowsell Shand involved in the day. You will be required to be on site from 10am to 6.30pm to film two scenes in a nearby park.
We are looking for:
5 x cyclists to be play members of a cycling team. Age not specific but would need to bring their own cycling kit.
4 x 14-16 year old cyclists to be on BMX’s. It would be great if one could do a wheelie or some kind of BMX trick.
1 x 4-9 year old child. Must be able to ride a bike.
Please could you supply names and contact details for anyone that is interested in taking part by 6pm on Monday 15th May. We will do this on a first come first served basis.
Thanks,
Naivasha
Everything else / Matt Bottrill Coached Time Trial
« on: April 17, 2017, 12:14:09 PM »
Holme Valley Wheeler's are running a days coaching from Matt Bottrill on the 31st May 2017. This is half term week and a great chance to ride the roads of the Holme Valley wheeler's stage races on June 9th and 10th that includes a ten mile time trial.
We have a men and women's event. All ways looking for women riders. We can have 80 women in the race so plenty of spaces for your women riders.
Last year we had two women riders from Manchester Wheeler's Tamsin Vicary and Laura Stafford. Hope you can send us a full team this year.
Thanks David Williams
