March 2017 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the Month for March is Holly Carter for the WIN!!! at Glossop Kinder Velo "Tour of Kinder" spoco.
First TT win of the year for a Wheeler too we think!
She then did a coast to coast victory lap two days later to celebrate.

Great start to the year Holly!

January 2017 - Rider of the Month

Bit late on this one, sorry guys. RotM for January is a joint one, going to John Gutteridge and Jack Johnson showing good things at the Track lately. Jack is currently leading the ACT seniors league while John is leading the Wheelers charge at the MRTL league in 29th overall. Good work guys.

February 2017 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for February is Brian Byland who is currently leading the Vets category at ACT league with only a couple of events left to go. Keep it going Brian!

January 2016 - Rider of the Month

Mick Style picked up a brilliant 5th place (V50) in the National Cyclocross Champs in Shrewsbury, and was 6th overall in his race. This following Decembers 5th place in the North of England champs in December too!

February 2016 - Rider of the Month

Brian Byland is currently leading the Vets ACT track league and racks up RoTM number two for the Byland family!

March 2016 - Rider of the Month

Goes to Andy Ashurst!

Far too many results to mention but he has been consistently bothering the top end of the results boards in the Lakes and Lancs SPOCO and SPOCO NW events of late, even picking up the V50 wins at the Circuit of Ingleborough and the Teesdale Hilly TT!

The latest league standings have him at 4th overall in the Lakes and Lancs league (2nd V50), and 6th V50 in the Spoco NW league.

Awesome work Andy!

April 2016 - Rider of the Month

For a raft of incredible early season TT performances, including a sub 21 over on the 10 course in Hull and sub 2 hours in his first ever 50! There was also the small matter of besting a certain Andre Greipel on a meaty Mallorcan strava segment whilst juggling a guinea pig and a chinchilla with one hand.

It's Gavin McCloskey-Lambert!

May 2016 - Rider of the Month

Goes to Andy Turner for his win at the Glossop Kinder Velo hilly TT. Congrats Andy. You win a nice mug of lukewarm tea!

June 2016 - Rider of the Month

Goes to Tamsin Vicary. Where to begin...?

She's racked up a great set of results with a 3rd place at Tameside and a promotion to 3rd Cat.

She then followed that with the WIN!! at the Harrogate Nova road race, attacking from a group of 9 on the final climb! Great write-up of the race here - http://www.harrogatenova.cc/2016/06/22/sharp-and-vicary-claim-the-nova-summer-road-races/

Not only that but she has been selected to ride at the Ras na mban in September (only Irelands biggest stage race!) with the Racing Chance Foundation.

A seriously impressive months work I think you'll agree. Keep it up Tamsin and best of luck at the Ras!

PS Pleeease don't leave us for a pro team next year...!

July 2016 - Rider of the Month

Goes to Holly Carter for setting a new women's 100 mile club RECORD of 05:01:35!

Incredible ride to topple the previous marker of 05:26:29 set by Nic Fox.

One down. Just the 10, 25, 50 and 12 hour records to go!

August 2016 - Rider of the Month

Sorry it’s a bit late this month but rider of the month for August goes to Chris Wilkinson for coming back from his operation and finishing the Manchester 100.

Chris does an amazing job every month leading the intro rides too which is pretty much the one regular ride we have on the rides list at the moment. Well done Chris!

September 2016 - Rider of the Month

Goes to Colin Lynch!

An incredible performance representing Ireland at the Paralympics in Rio, winning the silver medal in the C2 time trial, which he then followed up by setting a new paracycling world hour record of 43.133 km on his return to Manchester! A whole 3 km further than the previous worlds best!

Well done Colin! Tell you what... October's rider of the month better be good!

October 2016 - Rider of the Month

It's a World Track Masters stripey jumper joint effort this month, going to Andy Turner for gold in the individual pursuit and Scott Burns for gold in the Team Pursuit. I said Octobers RoTM better be good after Colin's effort and well, this is pretty good! Nice work guys!

November 2016 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for November goes to Barney Watson for winning the U8's race at the Stadt Moers round of the NWCCA cyclocross league. He has also picked up a string of impressive podium places including 3rd at Otterspool and 2nd at Northwich. Great work Barney. One to watch for sure. Could be a new Mick Style in the making!

December 2016 - Rider of the Month

Goes to Mick Style for rounding off another incredible CX season with 4th Vet overall (and 1st V50) in the NWCCA League final standings, as well as taking 7th V50 in the Cyclocross National Championships at Peel Park. Excellent work Mick!

Here are the previous Rider of the Month winners since May 2015. Just copying them over from the old forum for the sake of posterirty....

May 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the Month for May goes to newly crowned National Masters Road Race Champion and stripey jumper collector, Ruth Taylor.

Congrats Ruth!

Any nominations for Rider of the Month for June, please send me a PM. Ta!

June 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month this month goes to Scott Burns.

Not content with simply defending his Pursuit title at the Masters National Track Champs and bagging silver medals in both the Kilo and points race, Scott also set a new club 10 mile record of 18:43 on the Hull course (V718), edging out the previous record of 18:47 set by Si Bridge!

Just to put things in context that is 32mph average speed! The current competition record held by Alex Dowsett is 17:20, and Wiggins' recent attempt at the record resulted in a 17:58, (also on the V718 course incidentally).

Absolutely phenomenal work Scott!

July 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for July, without question, goes to Kiera Byland who managed to scoop not one, not two, but THREE gold medals at the special olympics held in Los Angeles!!!!!!!

Kiera took the wins in the women's 15km road race, the women's 10km road race and the women's 10km TT!

Amazing work Kiera!

August 2015 - Rider of the Month

Augusts rider of the month goes to Lukas Hodgson. Lukas notched up the overall victories in both the club Scratch champs AND the club Hill Climb champs... not to mention being fastest wheeler in all 3 hill climbs! And all on fixed gear too!

As if that wasn't enough he also romped home with the Briargrove Road sausage roll challenge, taking home the magnificent prize of 50 odd sossy rolls!!! What an absolute specimen!

September 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for September goes to Kristian Spreckley for being a little bit of a cyclocross demon and consistently smashing it up in the NWCCA races this season. Never outside of the top 5 in the Vets category so far!

Well done Kristian!

UPDATE: Just to add Kristian picked up his first win this saturday at the Port Sunlight Wheelers event. Nice work!!

October 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for October goes to Andy Turner who picked up a nice little medal haul at the recent LVRC National Track Championships in Newport. A bronze medal in the individual pursuit and silver in the 750m time trial! Well done Andy. Gold next time though please!

December 2015 - Rider of the Month

Rider of the month for December is unquestionably Scott Burns. It's not every day a member of the club attempts a world record, let alone The Hour. But Scott did it twice within a week!

Unfortunately he missed out on the masters (30-34) record of 47.76km set by the american Curtis Gunn, by a mere 159 metres. That's just over half a lap of the track! But the shear determination and refusal to give up was amazing. A second attempt was somehow miraculously arranged the following weekend, thanks largely to the Wheelers track crew giving up their session to make it happen. But the previous weeks effort was clearly still in the legs and it wasn't to be.

Scotts acheivement of 47.60km (29+ mph) is an astounding feat that is going to stand as a club record for a very long time to come. And it definitely gave the rest of us a bit of excitement over the christmas period. Thanks Scott!

Anyway, there's always the 35-39 record....

Maybe we could give some of it away at the club 10s when they start in May if you're keen to shift some of it? Doesn't solve the problem of where to store it in the meantime though.

Not too bad is it. Thanks to all who helped get this up and running, particularly Holly for helping with content/ layout and Gavin for sorting the hosting and helping set up the forum. The site is essentially a work in progress still and likely to evolve over time, so keen to hear any ideas for improvements. Will set up a new thread to get some feedback soon.

Club discussion / John Woodburn RIP
« on: April 16, 2017, 11:28:36 AM »
Life member and legend John Woodburn has sadly passed away.

A 25 mile, BBAR, 12 hour and 24 hour champion as well as holder of various point to point records, most famously, Lands End to John O Groats. John became the first rider to double up the 24 hour and 12 hour national championship victories in 1981 and his distance of 488.43 miles for the 24 still stands as a club record.

The thoughts of all connected to the club are with John's family at this time.

RIP John
